In the short film, "Consent", there is serious material or issue that's the topic and is shown in a casual and comedic way. The six minute short is taken in one location with the same actors and only adding two more people in the mix. The idea is very simple and shot simply. There are over the shoulder shots, medium close-ups, and few wide shots. The lighting is very low and the actual end product has a dark, faded circle filter present throughout the shot. I'm guessing this is to make the scene seem more intimate. The lines and were delivered in a very quick and slap-stick comedy manner that made the short almost sarcastic. The idea was to kind of mock the idea of every time someone were to intake in a sexual act, they would have to have papers filled out and people with professional status be present which makes the moment completely awkward and unappealing. I thought the idea was very clever and shows a different side of a serious issue. The idea is that although in a court of law, this situation would be the most pleasing but in everyday life, this scenario is unrealistic and unappealing. I liked this short even though it was awkward.
Consent is the masterfully executed embellishment of a single joke. The shots are all fairly standard and the small cast of five must have made casting a breeze. Getting the lighting right seems like it may have taken some thought, but once it was set, the setup probably didn't have to be changed much for each shot. The primary asset to this short is the writing. The comedy in the dialogue is excellent and it shows us that there is no real substitution for great writing. Consent looks as if it could have been easily shot by a film student, but I was laughing so much that I didn't care.
"Consent" was a neat little film that has a lot of fun with the idea of well... consent. The simplicity of the short worked really nicely for the back-and-forth comedic banter between the two parties. The actors and actresses did a really great job, especially with the lawyers' quick lines and the couple's facial expressions that communicated the dialogue perfectly. Although, the shooting style itself wasn't anything spectacular, it worked and didn't detract from the overall film. Furthermore, I really liked that no matter how you interpreted the director's take on planning, you understood that it is bound to be awkward that first time. Whether its because you DO discuss all these things, or you DON'T and find things getting awkward when they don't work out. Either way, you could tell the director had a lot of fun making this comedy and doing everything he could to heighten the awkwardness of the pair's first time and the questions that come along with it.
"Consent" was a great way to make a joke out of something that is taken very seriously. The simplicity of the shots were great. It was not trying to do too much and was not over done. I also liked the way that the character's expressions changed as the lawyers were talking to one another. I thought it was a good way to almost mock the situation and make it very funny. I also really enjoyed the use of sarcasm by the lawyers throughout the short. They delivered the lines in such quick succession that it made them very comedic. I really enjoyed watching this short because of its sarcasm and awkwardness. It made a serious situation very humorous.
"Consent" by Jason Reitman was laugh out loud funny. This short makes the act of "hookups" seem like a walk in the park. I am glad this has never happened with me and hopefully never will! I love the few shots that this has and the lighting seems to be just right. When he pulls the contract out, I thought, "queue the lawyers", and shortly after, they were there. Their comedic relief makes the situation one your able to talk with, that mostly goes pretty hush-hush.
The first thought I had when starting this film was that the acting was brutally awkward. I soon realized this was a comedy and they really did an effective job setting that up. The concept was a comedic take on a relevant and sensitive subject. It was a smart idea and well executed. I also think this was very efficiently made. They had a very simple set, simple shots and a fairly simple lighting scheme that really didn't have much to change. They were able to get the point across without having an elaborate set or a large variety of shots. I would be surprised if this took more than a day of shooting. I had fun watching this film and believe they did an excellent job poking fun on a serious issue.
HILARIOUS. I don't necessarily like the dark edge around the whole movie, it kept messing with my eyes. The cuts went very well with the overall pace of the short film. The content of the film was a subject that most people feel uncomfortable with which I find funny. It was a simple idea, using very simple film technique. The story is what made it.
Quite possibly the best short we have watched yet (opinion). Hilariously and creatively written script that brings out the humor in a very serious discussion. Best line: "I really dig the smell of your hair." As far as the shot composition, the lighting was a bit off. I understand the idea of the illusion of being in the dark, however, it was almost too dark to see what was happening on camera. Overall, great piece.
Haha! "Consent" was very entertaining. They did a great job over exaggerating the importance of consensual sex. It is very important that both parties understand what they want when it comes to sex. The idea of a contract and lawyers was just awesome. Again, I can see myself shooting this short. There wasn't anything special with the shots. The lightening could have been better and the quality was a bit low looking, but I don't know the budget. In the end this was a good short.
