Short of the Week: Plastic Bag by Ramin Bahrani

  1. "Plastic Bag" was a vehicle for a much larger message about waste and the environment. With undertones of religious questions. This film had a lot of unique pov and "over the shoulder shots" from the bag. I really enjoyed the nature shots, they used different kind of filters to give it a nostalgic feel as well. I was not a fan of the shaky, hand held kind of shots. It just made me feel like a guy was following a bag around instead of it having its own life. Using a bag seems like a simple enough idea, but I would image it being a lot tougher than you'd think, considering that you have to find wind. I image that some of the shots had to be computer generated, or at least helped by the computer. Overall I felt like this was a neat idea, with some very strong voiceover and camera angles, but a few things that I didn't like.

  2. "Plastic Bag" was a very smart and likable short. At first I thought it was going to be really cheesy and have no real purpose but the further 'the bag' told it's story, the narrative became almost poetic. I love the way this was shot too, everything was from either pov or following right along with the plastic bag which made the message very focused and clear. I thought most of the shots were captured in a very pretty way with vivid colors. The only thing I kept thinking about was how it must have been tricky to film this of a bag. I wasn't sure if it was the same one the whole time either. I was also thinking about how they either had to wait for wind or had to create some kind of wild for the majority of the shots in order to make the plastic bag come to life. Overall, I really enjoyed this short that ended with a really powerful message.

  3. In Plastic Bag, the filmmaker creates a new victim in the story of pollution. This is a broader story framed within a smaller one. The viewer becomes attached to the bag over the course of the short, and we get a new perspective on something that seems trivial. We also see how the bag negatively effects wildlife on its journey, and that humans have disappeared all together. The last line, "I wish she would have created me to die", really ties together the sadness we feel for our main character, and the underlying message about environmental consciousness.
In terms of technical work, the hardest part of shooting this would probably be getting the bag to do what you needed it to. I imagine they employed the use of some fishing line and a few fans to create their own wind in at least a few of the shots. Although, I have to admit, there were a few where the bag was very high off the ground, and I am not quite sure how they would have controlled that. I feel like they also went through several plastic bags, which is kind of ironic considering the message of the film. I'm sure they recycled them all properly. Having Werner Herzog do the narration really added to the legitimacy of this film, and I don't know if it would have been as intriguing as it was had they got someone else to do it. Overall, I thought this was a very enjoyable short, and the moral of the story is definitely worthy of the effort put into the film.

  4. "Plastic Bag" was a very well planned short with a great message. There had to be great difficulty in trying to make the bag move the way it did and still have a well framed shot. Most of the shots had great color making the shots more appealing to look at. I also liked the shots that were very close to the bag, making the bag seem like a human character in the story. The narration was also great. It was very meaningful and poetic throughout the entire short. It also helped the bag be brought to life. Overall, I thought this was a very interesting short that had a great message. It did a great job of making an object come to life.

  5. I really enjoyed "Plastic Bag". Right from the start the moment, Werner Herzog's voice I was into whatever was going to unfold in the 18 minute short. I am biased because I will watch anything Werner Herzog touches. The message was about the crisis this world faces with mass pollution and polluting our environment. It was true how Werner's voice brought the life of this plastic bag, to life. The way we use plastic bags goes unnoticed by practically all, but they are such a resourceful tool in our lives. This short was very enjoyable, in fact was reposted by me to some friends to share, and I will think twice the next time I say paper, rather than plastic.
