Short of the Week: In God We Trust by Jason Reitman

  1. This short "In God We Trust" was an excellent film to watch. The humor was there, the acting was great, excellent editing and camera angles. I really enjoyed how easy of a short this was to watch and would recommend to a friend to view. I can see how the direction of the film was done so well, because Jason Reitman is an incredible director. He was nominated for "Up in The Air" (one of my favorite films). I think the story was fairly predictable, once you realize he is going back into the real world, however it was still fun going on his adventure. One of my favorite scenes was the helping of humanity, when he smashes the boombox that is playing "Livin' La Vida Loca" by Ricky Martin.

  2. "In God We Trust" was a film filled with humor but also a great serious message. The director did a great job of being able to portray both the humor side with the back-lying message of doing good deeds to be able to go to heaven. The title of the film, however, did not make much sense to me. I understand the idea of the character trying to make it to heaven and to God, though it did not have anything to do with trusting in God. Likewise, I understand the point and importance of the quarter both in the intro and closer of the film, but simply focusing on a few words of that quarter shouldn't necessarily be the deciding factor of the name of the film. In all, the film was great, but the title was deceiving of what the film was about.

  3. They story is something we think of everyday, but has a twist too it. Everyone thinks of death, but this made it a light subject. The sound effects were different but fit well, and the soundtrack was nice as well. There were nice continuous action shots, and a nice variety of angle's to this film. The shots taken were appropriate to the mood, and made sense. The location's were good, and the sets were simple, but did what the director wanted them to do. I liked this film a lot, it had a lot of cool ideas, and a good story.

  4. Humor, charm, and wit are what makes the short film "In God We Trust" such a pleasure to watch. What begins as a simple story of a man attempting to avoid death, in fact turns into a twisted tale filled with themes of redemption, choices, and living life to the fullest.
I found the film to be very poignant and realistic, even though it was an exaggeration of the way things are thought to be. The characters and relationships were quickly established and gave the audience something to root for and hold on to, even though our protagonist had no clue at what was even going on. The use of closeups and slow motion really added to the growing tension as the final moments of our character's life were replayed in front of our eyes. "In God We Trust" definitely resonated well with me, leaving a feeling of joy and hope through heartwarming comedy. This has definitely been my favorite film so far from the semester.

  5. "In God We Trust" was a very humorous and enjoyable short to watch. I loved how they portrayed the way we look back on our lives and the things we have done in the past. While the story had some exaggerated parts, it helped make the short more enjoyable and the message very clear. I also really liked the camera work and editing. There were many different angles to help tell the story. My favorite shot was the shot with Robert running up the staircase. I enjoyed the editing throughout. The slow motion shot of Robert getting hit by the car really got my attention. This film was definitely enjoyable to watch with the story line, cinematography, and editing.

  6. "In God We Trust" is a really great story that puts mortality into an interesting perspective. I really loved the way the story gave a point system to the things we do, which decides our eternal fate, and how the smallest things can have a huge effect on your life. I also really like the characters especially Gil, who reminds me a lot of Agent Smith from "The Matrix". My favorite shots are the opening and closing shots that are the closeups of the quarter which really emphasis the title of the film. Overall the story was amazing and really funny and the characters were great.

In my opinion, "In God We Trust" was the most entertaining film of the week so far. It explores the afterlife and life choices in a unique and amusing way. It was a very lighthearted take on death but the themes were quite deep to me. A lot could be said about this film and a message of karma, moral values, happiness, and second chances. I really liked the way it was shot. A lot of bright scenes and some exciting and funny action. This was a very well-rounded short that was fun to watch.

"In God We Trust" was a very entertaining film. I love the way the director told the story of having good morals to go to heaven. The acting was the best out of all the other films we have watched. My favorite scene was when he gave his girlfriend his credit card. I thought that was hilarious. My second favorite scene was when he got most his life points back by dancing. Most of the film was very exaggerated, but the viewer got the point. The beginning of the short got my attention when he got hit by the car. It happened fast so you had to be paying attention. I liked this short so I plan to watch more by Jason Reitman.

  9. Jason Reitman does short form right with In God We Trust. In shorts, the clock is running out quickly from the first beat. This narrative is perfect for short form, as the main character's time is running out from the very start as well. The parallel with the form and the narrative really helps to sync up the feel of the story with the overall experience. There is some fantastic camera work going on in this piece as well. The establishing shot that zooms in from space onto the face of the coin really sets up the story nicely. The unique shot with the main character running up the stairs was really unique. The extreme closeup of the key turning in the door, of the ice cream melting. All of these shots really bring the short together in a fantastic way. The narrative is very upbeat in contrast to the reality of the subject matter, which is always interesting. The use of comedy in the face of doom has a very uplifting effect on the viewer, and paired with the positive ending, it gives us a sense that somehow at the end of life it all works out somehow.
