Short of the Week: The Camera by Peter Lewis

  1. The Camera is extremely well done even when you don't consider the obstacles that the director faced. But when you factor in the fact that this was made with Canon T2i on a budget of $50 and only a couple of days to shoot, you realize that it is an amazing work of cinema. The story is very intriguing and it seems that the meaning behind it was left purposefully somewhat ambiguous. You get a sense of loss and sadness, but also touches of playful spirit at certain moments. At the end you are left with a bittersweet notion that you can't quite put your finger on. There are some great shots in the film as well. The opening shots, where the camera is on the ground and the girl is walking away, and the close-up shot that follows her feet up the steps are both very different and eye-catching. One of the shots as she walks into one of the rooms shows her walking away off camera and then she reappears in the mirror. This shot works well at foreshadowing the ultimate fate of the character and is also just very artistically interesting. I loved this short from start to finish. This film helps us realize that with a little money, drive and creativity, anyone can succeed in filmmaking.

  2. The camera was beautifully made and also very creative. It surprised me when I read the bio underneath the video that it was shot with a simple canon t2i with such a budget as what the director used. The story was very simple to grasp and understand which made following the concept of the film easy for views to watch and enjoy. I was slightly disappointed with the videography of the last few shots, and how they abruptly changed shots ending with the closeup of the final Polaroid still. Perhaps allowing for more movement either from the camera or the Polaroid itself could have enhanced the ending. However, the ending of the story was great, and such a touching end to understand the reality behind the story.

  3. "The Camera" was a beautiful and almost haunting piece. The loose, undefined plot, as well as the striking close-up camera angles, and chilling, yet gorgeous piano score really work together wonderfully to capture a dream-like state and create an atmosphere of mystic enchantment. The film was simply stunning in its simplicity, as well as its complexity, and the wonderful illusion created by the two. The most inspiring aspect of the entire film though was the fact that it was filmed on a small camera, with $50, no crew, and while the director was on vacation. To me, this just proves that with the right inspiration and dedication, anyone can create a beautiful work of art through film. We just have to allow ourselves the chance.

  4. The soundtrack to this film was a really good way to add emotion to the film. It was a really different idea, that had a nice feel to it at the end. There was good editing, and the lighting was very pleasant. The location was beautiful and added to the whole dream like atmosphere of the film. I like the use of close up's on the feet going up stairs and the hand going for the door knob. I really like most everything about this short film. There were also nice shots of just here reaction and emotion to the absences of the man.

  5. "The Camera" was absolutely gorgeous and also slightly creepy. The lighting and camera compositions were superb and I really enjoyed how the story could be told so easily without dialogue. My favorite scenes were the ones that were shot outside because I'm a sucker for natural lighting. I was also very impressed at how smoothly the camera motions were especially while following the girl while she was running. The story kept me captivated until the very end as I was trying to figure out what will happen next, for an 8 min. film it was really good and made me want to watch again and again.

  6. "The Camera" was a very creative and unique story. It seemed so simple, yet it was extremely intriguing. The story line allowed for the viewer to feel the emotion of the character throughout the entire film. The story kept my attention simply because it was not easy to predict what was going to happen next until she started taking pictures. It was also amazing that there was no crew and was filmed in a short time span with almost no money. It proves that a lot of expensive equipment or people are needed to make a great film. There were many beautiful shots especially at the beginning of the film. The second shot of the film with her walking through the glass caught my eye right away. Also, I really enjoyed the shots of her taking the pictures. Going along with all the great shots was the music. It helped create the emotion of the film and fit perfectly throughout. I really liked this short film because of its simplicity and creativeness.

  7. "The Camera" was a very inspiring short film considering how it was made, according to the brief summary below the video. I loved how the camera movements made all the actions feel very fluid and in an almost floating manner. The audience feels as though they are experiencing the narrative almost like a bystander. I liked that the music complemented the narrative and movements of the shots. Even though there is no speaking, the films movements, shots, and scenery, make you feel as though this is a joyful and loving short film. The use of natural lighting was beautiful as it makes every scene feel warm and comforting. I love how each shot was taken from different perspectives through wide shots, close-ups, and POV shots. Overall, the short film keeps your attention throughout till the very end.

  8. "The Camera" was very inspiring. It shows that you don't need a lot of money or a very fancy camera to achieve something as beautiful as that short. I love the close-ups, the Point of Views, and the perspectives you were given by each individual shot. I think that it carried some true and real emotion in the piece. The silence (to me) added so much more to the short on an emotional level. This short made me feel really good on the inside.
